On October 10-11th at the Faculty of Chemistry of Jagiellonian University, GREENUS staff and professors met to discuss many issues related to waste management and educating students in the field of ecology and environmental technologies at universities in Poland.
Different Professors from various universities in Poland talked about topics of interest for GREENUS project, such as waste-to-energy, the water supply system in Kraków, resource recovery at the ‘Kraków-Płaszów’ municipal wastewater treatment plant; the topics revoled also around study programmes, such as “Waste management logistics” (realized at AGH University of Science and Technology), the cycle of education in the field of Renewable Energy Sources and Waste Management, the fields of study at the Faculty of Chemistry, international projects implemented by the Jagiellonian University in cooperation with foreign centers.
GREENUS consortium visited the Faculty of Chemistry and its laboratories where practical classes for students are held, but also MPO waste management company, where the Vice President of the Management Board Marek Kabaciński presented the principle of operation of Municipal Cleaning Company in Kraków, with a highlight on the good waste management practices: waste prevention is even more important than recycling, as it is intended to reduce the amount of waste produced. During the visit at MPO, special trucks for garbage collection were shown and the general principle of the company's operation was discussed. The visit continued in Barycz, a municipal waste landfill and the most modern Polish complex of ecological facilities for the processing and disposal of municipal waste. Barycz is also a producer of natural fertilizer, recovered in a composting plant from green waste.
